Here are our favorite releases of September 2023:
Connor:
After two dynamite EPs, Moonlight Sorcery has finally graced us with a full-length album, and it doesn’t disappoint. Horned Lord truly gives the best of both worlds, showcasing the richness and color of the best melodic death metal with the frigid atmosphere of black metal. It’s a fun, enveloping album that (hopefully) marks the official beginning of a long, prolific career.
Jared:
Tomb Mold return for their first record in 4 years with a complete overhaul of their style, expanding their death metal formula with progressive elements akin to Atheist, Cynic, and late-era Death. Tomb Mold have transcended the OSDM scene and become a creative force to be reckoned with.
Matthew:
I am kind of torn between Tomb Mold and Code Orange, but I went with Tomb Mold because I am still digesting the Code Orange album. I very much enjoyed the direction Tomb Mold went on the Aperture of Body EP and was eagerly awaiting a new album. Then the band announced the album as a surprise! The Enduring Spirit has a more proggy vibe than previous albums but is still a sonic juggernaut that doesn’t compromise on brutality. Tomb Mold also has really stepped up their songwriting on this album. It will be an AOTY contender for me.
Nathan:
I continue to be pumped listening to this record. I wrote many words about this a few weeks ago and stand by them. Some excellent, excellent death metal from one of the best death metal bands around.
