Our favorite albums of the month May:
Rutger:
Blut Aus Nord’s new record has such a haunting atmosphere that it really gets under your skin. It’s been quite a while since the last time an album has had that effect on me.
Nathan:
I guess Hallucinogen was just a happy pit stop. In any case, the new Blut Aus Nord record has the excellent atmospheres that I’ve come to expect from this band. Disharmonium isn’t as anti-melodic or as dark as some of their earlier work, but it’s just as excellent.
Jared:
Some progressive black metal with a technical edge that really ended up being an absolutely mind-blowing experience. It’s really unlike anything I’d ever heard before, and they blended the aesthetic of black metal with a progressive attitude and technicality in a way that seems like it shouldn’t work, but it absolutely does. Some of the best bass lines I’ve heard in a long time.
Leon:
Guess I’m on the Blut Aus Nord bandwagon. I’d say this is back to their ‘standard’ sound, but they’re always pushing their artistry and this one definitely has its own unique indentity. As far as quality goes, well, brilliance is almost a given at this point with BaN.
Rick:
Oppressive and desperate as per the doom metal mantra, but with extra energy and heaviness – the Candlemass way of thinking. This is everything I want out of doom metal: atmosphere and riffs and medium BPMs that nonetheless feel like tar slowly dripping.
“The demo was better.”
